The GSM specification requires the handset to authenticate to the network, but does not require the network to authenticate to the handset. This well-known security hole can be exploited by an IMSI catcher. The IMSI catcher masquerades as a Base Station and logs the IMSI numbers of all the mobile stations in the area, as they attempt to attach to the IMSI-catcher. It allows forcing the mobile phone connected to it to use no call encryption (i.e., it is forced into A5/0 mode), making the call data easy to intercept and convert to audio. IMSI catchers are used in some countries by law enforcement and intelligence agencies, but their use is illegal in others.

The unit has two stages of alert, which provide absolute protection. As soon as a GSM Interceptor is activated in your area, the phone will alert you to the threat. If your call is then intercepted, you will be alerted again that your call has been acquired and is unsafe to continue because of being insecure to eavesdropping. Another security feature is that mobile phone spy phone software cannot be installed or run on this handset, which means that it is not open to a 'Trojan' spy phone software attack.

This handset operates independently of any server exchange data and instead uses a highly complex engine to ensure all incoming and outgoing calls are swept for a backdoor break in communication in real time.
