Since George Orwell's '1984' novel it has become apparent that we are heading towards a total surveillance society. Spy Gadgets bring surveillance to a new audience, but should access be restricted? Ever since George Orwell’s famous novel and subsequent film 1984, we have heard the term ‘Big Brother’ used time and time again. In the book and film every waking moment of the entire human race was being watched, listened to, addressed and controlled. We live in a surveillance society, although most go about their daily activities almost oblivious to all of the cameras that are watching and recording. London has the most CCTV cameras per square mile than any other city in the world, there are speed cameras, traffic monitoring cameras, parking cameras. Literally, the camera has crept into every facet of our lives and spy cameras are, by there very nature, can be deemed as the most and least intrusive Spy cameras used to be something that could only be fixed into a ceiling or professionally installed into a large bag, with a big battery pack and a Hi8 Recorder, but these days they are built into what are deemed as spy gadgets. These spy gadgets include working pens, car remote control fobs, cigarette lighters all with pinhole spy cameras built in. Of course because these camera systems are so small then you would anticipate that these spy gadgets are no more than just toys, but this is certainly not the case. Some offer incredibly high resolution images and recording capacities. They are only really restricted a little by battery life, however, portable gadgets that are often body-worn generally only need relatively short-term deployment periods So, should anyone be able to buy spy gadgets. Well, to date the British government has not imposed any restrictions on this type of product. They can be used as training tools for training sales staff in a non-intrusive manner. Spy Equipment is of course used by private investigators, who have yet to be regulated, so really how can they be restricted. Whatever your viewpoint, it cannot be ignored that we are under surveillance by cameras anyway and as long as we go about our business lawfully, then we should have nothing to fear. Spy Gadgets are going to get more powerful and for now they are certainly here to stay! |
