Caught On Spy Camera: Carer Abusing Elderly Woman With Dementia

Adrian Mudd   February 6, 2018

Back in 2017, BBC Radio 4 released a programme on elderly abuse in the UK. Their reports found that a staggering 23,428 abuse cases had been registered UK-wide, with only 15 resulting in prosecution. As a result, more and more concerned families and friends are taking matters into their own hand, obtaining evidence that catches elderly abusers in the act. Read on to find out how spy cameras are helping us look after the elderly and to identify mistreatment.

That was certainly the action taken by Gina Owen and her family, who placed a spy camera in the living room of her grandmother, 78-year-old Sabrina Marsden. The elderly woman, who suffers from Dementia, was subject to abuse and ridicule by a carer in her own home.

The video, which was streamed live to Ms Owen’s mobile phone, recorded the carer repeatedly hitting the elderly woman and saying “God, you stink,” to her as she snatches away her blanket. Ms Owen then enters the living room to comfort her mother, while demanding the carer leaves her home and that her actions have been recorded as evidence.

Ms Owen told the Independent: “We only put the camera in because we thought she was being lazy. I didn’t expect to see that, I was shocked. I felt sick. When I came into the house to see her, I came in so calm and just said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m going to have to let you leave because I caught you slapping my mum on the camera’.”

The Importance of Elderly Monitoring

It’s sad and distressing accounts such as these that remind us how vulnerable our elderly friends and relatives can be.
